PROPER INFRASTRUCTURE FACILITIES IN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS NECESSARY FOR THE SUCCESS OF SARVA SHIKSHA ABHIYAN

Balarampur, 15 December 2009.Proper infrastructure facilities need to be created to make Sarva Siksha Abhiyan a true success. This was the view expressed by Shri Durga Charan Bhattacharjee, former Headmaster, Balarampur Abhay Ashram Nai Talim Vidyapith and one of the pioneers of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan in the district. Taking part at a seminar on SSA at the Bharat Nirman PIC being held at the Vidyapith ground by the media units of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry Shri Bhattacharjee said without creating necessary infrastructure fight against illiteracy under SSA cannot attain its desired results. He said the teaching lessons by any means should be our goal we have to see to it that proper sitting arrangements and drinking water and toilet facilities are provided to the students. At the same time in order to raise the level of awareness among the students proper cultural activities need to be undertaken, Shri Bhattacharjee observed.

Voicing concern over the huge number of illiterate women totalling around 23 crores in our country Shri Bhattacharjee said that actions need to be taken to bring down the number within a very short period. Citing data from the UNESCO report he also said that in our country the number of children between six and fourteen years is 20 crores. Out of them 6.5 crores including 4 crores girls do not go to school, he said. This is definitely an area of concern, he pointed out.

Shri Bhattacharjee called upon the teachers to play a proactive role so that the number of school dropouts comes down. He said bringing down the number of dropouts should be the mission of the teachers. The teachers should seriously think over the method of teaching and create interest among the students about extracurricular activities, he observed. He said teachers by merely performing a very routine role cannot bring about success to a mission like programme, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.
